Communicating via blog

This class was really interesting to me. Especaially, with the class activities and blog assignment. It was very very helpful to me. English is my second language and often time i am quite in class because i am scared of making mistakes. However, the blog assignment atleast made me write to some extent and gave me an opportunity to share my thaughts and idea with other class mates. I really appreciate the effort that the professor put in making the class interesting. The block assignment, protecting egg and even the one and two way communication assignment. I did not comment a lot of blog but by commenting other people blogs often made me think. I realized that I viewed and thought stuffs in my culture very narrow. Other people's blog made me think broad. The Global way. There are times in a diverse learning environment we cannot express certain things. Because, the way i think might seem akward to others and this prevented me to express my thoughts. But, blog has made that easy. To be honest, blog has now became a mode of communication. I will definately post some interesting things and topics that i will find in my life. Especially, professor's blog will be viewed often.
Thank you professor for all the effort you put in making this class interesting.
I really enjoyed the class.

Management Poem

To be honest, writing poem was really hard for me. English is my second language and to write a poem put me in trouble. However, i did it. I wrote a poem in Nepali which is my first language and then translated to English.
So, Please feel free to comment and suggest me .
Management is like a boat,
A vessel one must keep a float.
And if you cannot keep your own crew,
A lonely captain left are you.
So, if you wish to suceed,
Give your crew all they might need.
And lead them out to distant lands,
With a tight ship and a steady hand.

The ABCs of DISC

It really surprised me how successfully; Prof. Kurpus reflected my Leadership and management style. By answering 28questions and all almost with similar response, he actually reflected my leadership style. To be honest, he was right and accurately predicted my personality. I am a person of DhighI type. I love to accept challenge and deal with problem. I am very ambitious, have a strong will power and aggressive. Before coming to the United States, I was determined to continue my education for a better life. However, it became a reality when I admitted myself to LaGuardia Community College. I was aggressive. I applied on July 29th and was admitted within a month. However, I promised to get out of LaGuardia within two years. However I was never satisfied with the internship and jobs that I did. I always asked for more jobs to do at my jobsite and was never satisfied. I was performed my work differently every time. By being efficiency on time or by using some new methods to do it. I even compared the cost related to do the job while working along with my work. With low I, I agree 100%. As a student of science of high school, I always believe on facts and data. I always reflect the data, calculate and compare with in them so that we can use the best options.
I agree that the test was right with me but would disagree that the test would be positive with everybody. I would have fallen in different type of personality but selecting other choices for the answers. Might be I was into his category because English was not my first language and I was just looking to the closest answer rather than understanding what it exactly meant. However, this test might be true for certain people; I would disagree that the probability would be low for group.

VISION... Do you think it make things happen?

Different people have different goal. Even goal changes along with time. I still remember the date May 14th, 2004 when i left my family back home in Nepal; my goal was to come to the United States, make money and return home with substaintial amount of wealth and live a happy life. But, it was not true neither easy. It changed over time. Working 12 hrs daily in an Indian Restaurant, and having one day off changed my vision after six week. I still remember the customer that influenced me to join school. Suddenly, my vision changed. I went to school like an aimless ship that does not know where to go. I didn't know what i want to be, what i want to do. Just had a vision for a better life. What makes a life better?. I didn't had any good answer; i didnot knew what i want to be and how i want my life to roll. I didn't even understand the education system, what classes to take, what career to pursue. Admitted as a nursing major changed my career to Science and then to business. Talking to different students, professors, exploring different career options and workshops helped me make my career visible. Infact some professor became my mentor and helped me make my career visible.
My future Goals that i want to achieve:
Academic:
Complete my undergraduate in Accounting and mathematics minor.
Continue my graduate degree in Finance from accredited university. NYU being on top.
Professional Certification:
1. Certified Public Accountant
2. Certified Internal Auditor
3. Certified Fraud Examiner
Business:
1. I would like to be in the top level management in one of the big four accounting firm. Delliotte is my first preference.
2. At one point, i would like work on my own. I would like to open up my own CPA firm; work for my self and practice for my community.
3. Apart from consulting and practices in US, i would also like to establish business overseas in Nepal based upon my career.
Personal:
Apart from my work, i would like to give time for my family too. I would like to maintain a proper balance between my family and my work. I would like to acquire some assets that could give my family a happy life. I am mostly concerned about my culture and better education to my childrens. As i already mentioned, that i am from Nepal and we live in a joint family. I have to take care of my parents and sisters. Even though i live in the United States, I am still responsible to take care of my parents.
How am i going to Achieve:
I only have about two semester to go. After my undergraduate degree, i will look to work for one of the big accounting firms and continue my education for my graduate school. In the mean time, I will also prepare for different certification in different steps. The first certification i will do is CPA, then CFE and CIA. I will work for this firm for about six to eight years and do my practice part time to bild my client. After, that i would like work full time for myself and start looking to do something in Nepal related to my career.

Decission Making

I never thaught that we would be in a situation that we had to decide about our own grading policy and exam format. The activity was a great exercise on decission making. Under the pressure of time with eighty students we had to come at a conclusion with 100% agreement in making two decission. The curve to be implemented for the first midterm and format of the exam and this was a utilitarian concept of making decission that would benefit the entire class. Almost everybody spoke on their best interest. Some classmates that had better score raised their voice to drop the lowest grade of the two midterm where as students who did not perform at their first midterm were much worried because there was no gurantee that we could do better in the next exam. However, i was very much convienced with the curve rather than any other options but would accomodate with any feasible decission. There were several conflicts among different groups of students. eventually every one came to an agreement beside Joey. He sticked very much to his ethics. Ethically, he believed that this subject was not hard and would not like any curve or any other options proposed by the students and it was not fare to the professor. He basically believed that he was responsibile for not performing well and sticked to his view of not changing his grade. Finally one of the class mate suggested that, Let Joey keep his grade and every one would go with the curve and drop the lowest grade. Joey agreed to that. Then we were about to discuss about the format, Mike stepped up and convenced Joey that he would benefit either way. Why not to go along with the class. Suddenly Joey compromised with the class decission and said this is utilitarian view. But, Mike responded brother we can go even with out you, it is for your own benefit. Thus every one agreed to move on to the format of the exam with 100% agreement to drop the lowest grade and the curve.
Deciding the format of the exam was the next biggest issue that the class had to agree upon. Personally as far as i was concerned, i liked the format but would be more happy if he added some extra credit question and some options to chose fromt he question. This would give me more room for me to boost my points in the next exam. I liked th emultiple multiple question because, i am not good at multiple question. From the multiple multiple question, i can accumulate more points than multiple question and that makes sence. And, the entire class agreed upont the same format with some extra credit question and one choice for essay question. The entire class was on 100% agreement along with the professor to work accordingly.

As far as i was concerned, i was very happy with the decission. It favored me. I was also ready to compromise along with the class because we cannot please every one when making a decission. Someone has to compromise, and some will be ignored One reason that made me keep quite because my grade was on the mean. If i would had to make decission, I would welcome all ideas and narrow down the decission proccess timely based upon the benefit of the class. I would stick to the utilitarian view and would have decided.

An Eggs-cellent way to Plan

I am really confused about this assignment. It is for the way our team planned to save the egg or for my own future plan?

Let me start with the class activity.

The main objecctive of the class activity was to save the egg while it was dropped from a height of 10 feet. To be honest, i was more interested in getting the five extra points rather than saving the egg which was impossible with out saving it. We really had limited resources eight straw, a tape about five feet, a scissior to be shared with 80 other class fellows, half the egg was to be visible and under pressure of time. We did not had much strategies because it was small activity. However, we were positive that we will be sucessful in acheving our goal to save the egg. Some suggested that the short person should go because it will reduce the height of the fall and will reduce the gravitaional pull and will help to some extent to save because force = mass of the object * Accleration and accleration depends upon height. So we agreed upon to proceed scientifically which was a good explanation. Most of our group members were tall so we decided to let the shortest person to do drop the egg. Divyam was selected finally. The biggest challenge was the design. With limited resources, we had to design to save the egg. Some suggested to make several triangles that can hold the egg. Other suggested to make a strong base which can absorve the force to save the egg. But, the question was what about if the egg tilt. We don't know where the Yolk of the egg is. It might fall towards the yolk because it is the heaviner than the albumen. So we decided to save the egg equallyt on all the sides. We made plans and accordingly, i cut the straws to give support to the egg. Two of us were responsible to get the scissor first and give it to me to cut the straws. We worked accordingly and completed the task. There was ahuge issue that we have coverd more than 50% of the egg. However, we modified and the entire class was convinced eventually. We drop the first time it didn't break. My class buddies claimed that the professor didn't see it and were asked todrop the second time and we were not lucky this time.

My Biggest Management Problem

To be honest, my biggest management problem is Time Management. I was very punctual and managed my time very efficiently before. Now, i can't. I kill my free times by watching movies, listening movies or busy checking mail and being online most of the time. I am taking five classes and working approximately 30 hours per week. I understand that time is very iomportant for me but still i can't. May be being tired from work my body needs some time to relax or might be not too much pressure from my classes. However, i manage to do my assignment on time but do not revise them. I am good at managing my finances. Very often my family obligations comes ahead and stops me from doing any thing else. As mentioned before in my introduction, i am from nepal where we live in a joiont family. The main responsibility of a son is to take care of their parents and family. We respect our elders and have to take care of them. This might be my biggest problem that i can't reject or manage against any other obligation.
